I figured you might be interested in learning a little more about who I am outside of my business. I just love to learn about the personal lives of others and really get to know who they are and what they love to do.

That is what you are getting today. Be prepared for a lot of pictures to get a sneak peak into my life.

So who the heck am I?

I love to backpack and rock climb! I did not find any pictures easily for this, however before we had my son we took 2 epic vacations virtually back to back. We first hiked the John Muir Trail (211+ miles) in 16 days, then hoped on a plan and rock climbed in Greece for 10 days then hiked around Switzerland for 7 more! Talk about epic summer!

My hubby is an engineer and loves doing woodwork projects. He designed and together we built my sons crib. We are currently working on his toddler bed.

1

I am also handy around the house! My husband was super busy the week before my son’s first birthday, so it was up to me to build his sandbox. It turned out amazing!

7

I guess I do more than woodwork. We have slowly, but surely done all the upgrades on our house ourselves. Our most recent one being the master bathroom! I am the tiling expert and my hubby does all the tile cutting and measuring.

 9

We have gone rock climbing several times since my son was born and I got this adorable picture of my hubby “teaching” my son to belay. (Don’t worry no one was climbing!)

IMG_2005

Many people will think we are nuts for doing this and we do too, but when my son was 3 months old we went on a 6 week road trip. We borrowed my in-laws tent trailer and hit the road. It was such an amazing time to bond at a family.

Because this is just to cute not to post.

Nothing like an adorable beanie to make this picture that much cuter!

Still best buddies. Good thing Lassen loves his brother too and puts up with him laying/sitting on him all the time.10

Helping Mommy and Daddy make homemade pizza dough. This boy loves to help us cook.

12

Green juice anyone?! He loves to make it and will drink it, most of the time, too.13

My other hobby. Octonauts cake for my son’s 2nd birthday party! He is only going to get epic cakes every few years because man is it a lot of work!

As moms we are always looking for the best way to plan out our days, well today I am going to tell you what I do.

How often have gone to sleep thinking, what did I really get done today?
Did I really just clean all day?
I had so many things on my to do list did I even accomplish anything?

Oh do I know the feeling.

I am known to share every small task I do during the day to my husband, mainly to prove to myself I did something. (Yeah, he obviously really loves me, ha!)

I have tried out a variety of different methods of creating my daily schedule and this “non schedule” is what currently works great for me. Not only does it set my day off on the right foot, but I know how to improve each day too. *Adapted from The Five Minute Journal*

Each morning, before I start my day I write out the following things:
  • 3 things I am grateful for
  • 3 things that would make my day great
  • My top 1-3 business goals for the day. (Along with estimated times to complete them.)
  • An affirmation: I am …
  • Note any family activities/appointments for the day.
  • Dinner plan
Every evening before I go to bed I answer the following questions:
  • What are 3 things that made today amazing?
  • How I could have made today better?

So there you have it.

This method has really allowed me to focus on everything good I have going on each day.

The biggest thing though, is I am almost always complete the business tasks I set for my self. If I complete them all and still have time to work, I grab my master to-do list and pick something out to do.

Ending the day with how I could have made today better really allows me to reflect and gain insight on what to implement tomorrow.

How do you plan out your day?

What is it that moms really want to know about starting a business? Can you really start a successful business, while being an amazing mom?

Do you want the real answer, not just a yes like most people share? You want me to be honest, right?

Of course you can, but it is not going to be easy.

You can do anything you set you mind to. I am not going to sit here and tell you every mom can create a 100K business working 10 hours a week because lets be honest everyone is different, every business is different. Even more, not everyone has that same goal. You can make whatever you goal is a year, run a successful business and be an awesome mom, however you have to realistic and honest with yourself.

It is all about designing a business that fits into the life you want to live.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • How many hours are you willing to work a week?
  • How much money do you want to make?
  • What are your families goals for the next 5 years?
  • What is your ideal business? What is your business model?
  • What do you truly want out of your business and life?
  • What are you willing to do to make it happen?

So how do the answers actual help you?

Let me give you an example. I am willing to work up to 30 hours a week on my business with the current goal to make 100K a year. My family wants to be able to travel 3 months of the year, move to the mountains and build our dream house, both work from home or have flexible schedules and work hard now to play more later. My ideal business is working from a laptop, doing group or membership offerings with a few one on one’s. I want to also have several passive income streams. I want to create a business and life that I love and make me and my family happy. My husband is willing to work a job he does not love right now to support us as I grow my business. I am willing to put my son in “School” a few mornings a week. I am willing to work naps and after my son goes to bed to make it happen. Knowing all of this really gives me a realistic look of how I can take my business to the place I want it to go and create the life I want.

It is still going to be scary, there will be tough, tired days and others where your kids take priority (which they should.) It is normal and it is ok. That is why I created the Mama’s Biz Cafe Facebook group. It is a place of people that get it. They are all doing what you are. Going after there dreams while being that amazing mom too. Build your support system. Find other moms that get it, they are invaluable.

You can be a fantastic mom and run a successful business, you just need to be realistic, figure out what you want and what you are willing to do to get it. I am your biggest cheerleader and support, you are not only.

It is your turn, in the comments tell me what you are willing to do to make the business YOU want happen?

As I dive deeper into the online business world, I feel this intense pressure and expectation to succeed quickly, work 15 hour days and join every program because you “need” them.

Geez, I have enough mommy guilt already.

Every where you look there are opt-ins, webinars or sales pitches all about making $10K in 10 days, methods to finally reach 6-7 figures, and how to get your first 5 figure month. I am not going to lie, that all sounds great and many of us may have those as goals.

However, if you are like most moms, that is not why you started your business.

In the past 2 weeks I have spoken to 12 moms to see what they are struggling with in running a business. (I challenged myself to talk to 100 moms, I would love to chat with you too!)

Guess what, money has rarely even been mentioned. Do they want to make money? Heck yes, we are running businesses after all, but for moms is it about so much more than business.

They want freedom, to feel accomplished, peace of mind, and to learn how to actually get it all done in the little time we have.

Most of all, they want to be home with their kids.

It is such a special time in our lives that many moms actually put their dreams on the back burner for the chance to be home with them.

I believe whole heartedly that you can create a business and life you love, while raising your kids.

Is it easy, heck NO.

Is it worth it? I am guessing everyone of you is nodding their head YES.

Do you want to make 100K in a year? Awesome. Are you cool with $1,000 a month? Perfect. What ever your goal is fantastic.

For me, I want to hit 100k, but most of all, I want to be able to cherish this time with my son and build a business I am proud of and I love. If snuggling with my son all day when he is sick or even taking an impromptu day to the beach keeps me from hitting 6 figures, I could care less.

Personally, I started my business for myself, but really I did it to be home with him. If my goals take a bit longer, that’s cool. He is only this age once and I am going to cherish every second I have with him.

The point? Stop feeling the need to run your business like anyone else. To feel like you have to work long hours, sacrifice time with your kids, get rich quick or your failed. This is YOUR business, YOUR dream, YOUR goals and it is different than anyone else’s.

Be realistic. Figure out how much time you are willing to put into your business and how much money you would like to make and decide what you are going to sacrifice. Any answer is ok. It is your life and as long as you are going after your dreams and are happy who the hell cares what anyone else thinks.

Why are YOU running a business?

How often do you have a task or activity in business or life that you know you need to do, but keep putting it off? It may be something that will take you literally 5 minutes, but you keep putting it on a list or ignoring it for whatever reason. Whether you are not sure how to do it, it is our of your comfort zone or even it is just a boring task you need to get it done.

Today I challenge you  to do one of those tasks you are putting off.

Grab your computer, paper, broom, scrub brush and get it done.

Take the 5 minutes to learn how to do it or just ask someone, then do it.

Get your family involved, if you can.

If you have a task or activity you need to do that will take 10 minutes or less, don’t write it on your list, don’t wait until later, just do it.

My hubby used to always bug me to do this, but it was not until the last 6 months I have started following his advice. It has changed my life. It is so much better to just suck it up and complete the task then keep waiting. Not only is it done, but there is such an accomplishment that comes with completing it, no matter how small.

So stop reading this and get to it!

Becoming an entrepreneur was something I always felt like was a given.

*Long Post Alert*

When I was 9 my parents opened up a vocational school, that is where it all began. I watched them passionately go after their dreams with everything they had. I saw the good, the bad and the ugly. We helped or hung out most evenings and weekends as they quickly grew their business. Then graduation time came (for their school) and it solidify my dream to open a business too. I watched hundreds of people walking across the stage smiling, crying, pumping their fists with complete joy that they had completed school. We heard stories over and over how their lives were changed forever by the staff, teachers and support they received. My parents built that, talk about inspiring.

I left for college knowing I would one day start a business, but I was not sure what it would look like. I took a part time job, for fun, at a coffeehouse and feel in love. From that moment everything I did was to get me to the goal of opening my own. I finished my Bachelors in Business, got my culinary degree (from my parents school) and worked any where I could to get more experience.

After I graduated, my parents and I actively began looking for and putting offers in on coffeehouses for sale. Nothing worked out. I was heart broken, but also held off on searching more after meeting my husband. I think love does this, it makes you realize life can lead you in different directions and that is ok too.

I got a corporate job, which I hated and realized running my own business is what I wanted/needed. I craved the community, people knowing your name and the warm cozy feeling you get outside of the corporate world. I got my MBA and with my, then boyfriends, support went back to managing a coffee shop. Don’t get me wrong I still planned to open a coffee house and my husband was/is in full support, but the timing was not right. (He even mentioned it in his vows! Yeah, he is super sweet and so supportive.)

We decided to start training and planning an epic 1 year trip before we settled down, started my business and had a family. We were going to backpack and rock climb across the country and we could not be more excited, until I got injured. This was not just a set back, it was a stupid small injury that would not heal. I was forced me to quit my job and sit on the couch for 6 months. It was a tough time in my life and a lot of my dreams and goals were questioned.

Fast forward a year, we moved to San Diego to settle down. I began helping people with business plans while writing my own. We did not want to take the risk of a full blown coffee house, yet, so I started selling baked goods at farmers markets. (I ended up focusing on allergen free, due to new food sensitivities. Looking back I would have chosen differently.) It was an amazing experience and I ended up meeting someone who helped me take my dream in a new direction. I was all of the sudden running a wholesale bakery. I got a co-packer, distributor and started selling my frozen cookie dough in local grocery stores. I was in 18 when my son was born and I had a major awe hah moment.

I was not passionate about this business and I wanted to shut it down. As a new mom all my emotions were running crazily, but I felt more clear than ever. I was running my business while home with my son and had no motivation to make it work. I realized that I had handed over what I loved the most for others to do. I was no longer baking or even talking to customers, all I did was paperwork. I was heartbroken and felt guilty, but knew I needed to shut the doors to my company.

I knew I wanted to run my own business still, but I also knew I wanted to be home with my son, a coffee house at this time in my life was off the table.

I did a lot of soul searching, dreaming, and goal setting with my husband.

That is when I realized I wanted to help other moms like me. I wanted to help you realized what it was your truly wanted out of life. Help others design a business you love that fits the life you want.

Now here we are. The road has not been easy. My plans and goals have changed more times than I had ever imagined, but that is life. I have new big goals and dreams and still plan to one day open my coffeehouse, I just had to realize that I needed to do what I loved and was right for me now and that will change. Be open and honest with yourself and go after your dreams.

You do not have to wait, figure out what you want, make a plan and go after it.

What lead you to want to run your own business?
I have always dreamed of opening a business.

I grew up watching my parents run and grow a very successful business. I saw the good, the bad and everything in between that came with running a business. I knew I without a doubt wanted to do the same thing.

I decided to open a coffee shop bakery.

Then, you know what? Life happens. Things change.

I got married, found out I have food sensitives (including dairy), the stock market crashed and my parents got divorced (they were to invest to help me start) and things changed.

You take a different path, there was a fork in the road and no matter how hard that can be, keep you head up and keep moving forward.

I did start a successful wholesale bakery, with my frozen cookie dough sold in 18 stores. Then my son was born and I quickly realized it was NOT the business I always wanted. I no longer had time and the option to play at doing something that never felt quite right.

That is where this business was born. I realized how much life changed after becoming a mom. My dreams were still there, but somehow they kept getting pushed aside. One day I realized that I needed to be more than just a mom and that was ok, in fact it was great.

I knew, then and there, that I needed to help moms go after and get all they have ever wanted. To show them that you can make it happen while being a mom and it is ok to do something for yourself. I get it. I know what you want, because I was you. You want  support, inspiration, motivation and accountability to make it happen. You are looking for a community that you can share the good days and the bad days. A place of trust, encouragement and support in every aspect of your life.

I help moms, because everything changed when I became one. I was the same person, but completely different. More confident in myself and completely lost at the same time. More determined than every to build a life I wanted and show my son he can to, but so overwhelmed on how the heck I would ever get there.

I am here to tell you that YOU can design and create a business and life you have always wanted.

You do not have to put it off and wait until the kids are older. You are never 100% ready.

It is time to stop hoping, wishing and dreaming and time to jump in and make it happen.

Tell me, what are you waiting for?

For years now I’ve been trying to create a morning routine that I will actually stick to.

Over the past year I’ve experimented with a variety of morning routines to see what will work best for me and my family.

The thing is life with kids means things are always changing.

I now have a two-year-old son. I went from breast-feeding every morning first thing to being able to take him on my walks to him not wanting to sit still that long. My husband worked out of the house for six months and I was able to get up and work out well he looked after him before he got to work.

So I’m saying that things change, they’re always changing, and we need to create an morning routine that works for us and whatever is currently going on in our lives.

Here are some suggestions.

  • Write out your dream morning. In as much detail as you can. I found as a mom that I need to do two, one assuming my son is home, another as if he was not. (Helped me get clear on what I truly wanted and realistic on when I would need to get up).
  • Create a list of must haves for your morning. This is things that you need, want or must do every morning.
  • Then experiment and try out a variety things to see what fits and works for you.

I recently read The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. I love his concept of the six steps you should do each morning to set yourself up for your best day and life.

Here is my current morning routine.

  • Night before - I set my phone across the room so I have to get out of bed turn the alarm off.
  • Wake up at 5;30am - so early!
  • I make myself brush my teeth and drink water to help me wake up.
  • I read several affirmations I wrote for myself.
  • I spend five minutes stepping into my higher self and visualizing the future I want.
  • I get a workout.
  • I spend 10 minutes meditating. (I use the Headspace app). It is suggested to meditate first, however I found that if I did that I would just fall asleep, ha.
  • Spend 10 minutes reading
  • Write down 3 things I am grateful for and 3 things I want to accomplish that day.
  • Then if I’m lucky I will have a cup of tea and watch some morning news before my son wakes up.
  • At some point during the morning I like to put on a morning playlist, with some theme songs and dance around with my son.
  • We usually do breakfast within 30 minutes of him waking up.
  • Every other morning I take my dog for a walk.

My musts are working out, tea, and music/dancing with my son.

As I continue to do this morning routine I hope to find and add more must haves to my list.

I will be honest not every morning goes smoothly. Some days my son wakes up early, and occasionally I let myself go back to bed (trying to stop doing that though). However every morning I get in my must haves, even if it does not happen until 11am. Do what you need for yourself to create the best day and attitude to build the life you want and deserve.

What is your morning routine?

Becoming more productive and improving my time management, is an everyday challenge and experiment.

I’ll admit right off the bat I’m not fantastic at this, but I’ve learned a lot of great ways to improve the way I work because I’m constantly trying to improve. I’ve tried things that I hated doing or did not work for me, but I’ve also found things that have worked so well I can’t believe it took me so long to try it. I would suggest as you learn new productivity tips and time management skills test them out and see what works for you your life. Implement the ones you like and discard the rest.

Here is what currently works best for me

  1. Create a short to do list. Put down only 1 to 3 items you want to complete each day. This allows you to feel accomplishment when you complete them. I do have a master list I can look at if I finish all three and have more time.  However, as a stay-at-home mom, I have maybe four hours a day to get things done so I have to be very focused and specific about the tasks I need to complete.
  2. Set a timer for when you work. There are variety of ways to do this, online, phone apps or your phone timer. I work for 25 minutes and take a five-minute break, then work for 25 more minutes and take a five-minute break, repeat this four times and then take a longer break. This helps you to stay very focus when you are working and it gives you the ability to have time to do the things that normally distract you. I do find that I often work much longer than 25 minutes, but always set the timer for 5 minutes when I do need a break.
  3. Declutter your work space.  I’m talking desk, files, paperwork, computer folders and email. By getting extremely organized it is easier to cut down 20 minutes of looking for something you need to complete a task. This may seem odd or like a no brainer, but it really made a huge difference, not only in the way you work, but  how productive you are and gives you a positive attitude.
  4. Prepare your desk in advance. In other words, make sure that your computer is up and running, grab your water and snack, if needed, along with what you will be working on. This way when you have time to work or your kid goes down for a nap you are ready to go. This also keeps you from getting distracted by cleaning, laundry or other random activities that you want to get done too.
  5. Close all your extra tabs. When working and online it is very easy to have a lot of windows open. This is something I still struggle with, but I’ve been trying to improve on. I find the more I have open, the more distracted I am, and the more likely I will get off task. By only opening the tabs you currently need for your task you will be more likely to stay focused.
  6. Create a special activity box for your children. Depending on their age it is great to have a special box of toys or activities for you kids to play with only when you are working. There are times that you need to get something done and your kids may not want you to, so by having a fun activity can give you the time you need to finish up what you are working on. I have used TV during these times, I just tried to limit it. I find I can easily be so focused that I continue to work while he gets show after show after show.
  7. Learn on the go. Listen to webinars, podcasts, trainings, video blogs while walking, driving or running errands. I find times that my son is strapped in an awesome time to continue to learn.  I do make sure I don’t do this every time I get the car or go for a walk because my son does like to chat too.
  8. Get a planner. Whether on the computer or a paper calendar choose something that you will stick to in order to stay organized. Create yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goals and plan out how you are going to get them done. Then schedule in family time, personal time, workouts, date nights, activities with your kids and anything else you need. Get clear on what you need to do and when to help you actually stick to it.

These tips are what I’m currently using and work for me. I am slowly, but surely becoming more productive and organized in my everyday work and life.

I’m not here to tell you the best way to market yourself, who your ideal customer is, or how to brand yourself stand out.

Today we are talking about your “competitors.”

First off, I do not really believe in competitors, because we are all so different in who we are and how we help people. However, checking out those who have a similar business as you is so important. Not only are you able to see if people are successful in your industry, but you also can get clear on how you are different.

So here is the deal.

Hop online and do a bit of research. Look up 3 businesses doing similar work. Then check out 3 business that you admire, in any industry.

As you look at each site ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What do they sell?
  2. Which product is most popular? What do you like and dislike about it?
  3. Are they successful?
  4. Do you like their branding? What do you like and what do you not like?
  5. How is what you sell or plan to sell different? What makes you unique?
  6. For businesses you admire – look at the things that you love they’re doing and think of ways that you can implement that into your business.

By answering these questions you can then go back to your business or business idea and implement everything that you have learned. Look at your products/services and add in things you felt they were missing, tweak your brand to be even more true with your audience and yourself, get really clear on how you are different, and finally add in something you learned that your business favorites are doing that you think can make a big difference in your business.

There is so much you can do with this information. So get out there and start researching.

If you feeling stuck, frustrated or just plan unsure of how to make your dream a reality, book a  FREE call with me.

What is one business you absolutely admire?
